Across my desk – Surrey Banners

It seems serendipitous that certain projects are proposed
just when the right creative juices are flowing.

I have used the concept for my recent multi media paintings for the basis of a batch of designs for street banners. The City of Surrey has a call for artists and the theme was “Sustainable energy for All” as the focus for 2012 of the United Nations.

My thought is that the forces of Nature (that create the patterns that I am SO obsessed with at present…) are a global phenomenon. Waves, ice, branching, erosion, growth all share the same physical elements all over the world.

The banners each have an upper panel with an “iconic” salute to Water, Sun, Wind, Bio… and then a decorative motif of a related pattern below. They had to be a mirror image for each pair of banners so that was a bit of a challenge.

The submission deadline is open till the middle of December so I won’t hear anything till after that. This is what it is all about when submitting for public art calls…
you do your best and then forget about it!

Sometimes it is successful, sometimes you don’t get the project but other things spin off from the contact, and sometimes you never hear a thing back.
Keep your fingers crossed for me.
