In past years the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (VCBF) has celebrated color and creativity with local Plein Air artists. The historic tradition of painting “in the open” includes the Group of 7 and the French Impressionists. VCBF workshops and the popular OPUS Plein Air challenge were part of the activities hosted by VanDusen Botanical Gardens.
Under the guidance and enthusiastic direction of watercolor painter Alfonso Tejeda, talented artists and instructors have shared the joy of working directly from nature with enthusiastic students and beginners.
This year Alfonso’s creative adventures are taking him further afield – but we are happy to say there will be artists out there capturing the best blossom with fresh paintings to be featured in a wonderful exhibition from April 6-23 at VanDusen, and everyone is invited to get creative at the Plein Air PAINT OUT & PICNIC on April 20th VanDusen Gardens.

Beginning in early spring, a group of 10 BC plein air artists will be working in their studios and on location throughout the Lower Mainland at the best blooming spots. They will each add a final piece to the collection with “wet paint” as the group takes up their brushes for the Plein Air PAINT OUT & PICNIC ! April 20th 10am-3pm
