Plein Air painting is a growing phenomenon, with a long history from the French impressionist painters to our own Canadian Group of Seven. Locally Opus Art supply have been hosting & heavily promoting events & equiptment to a growing audience.
Very popular in the US – Plein Air Paint Outs, festivals and competitions have become a travel destination/experience for many artists. The international Sketchcrawl.com will give you a sense of the global reach of this fun & social activitiy.
Now when I travel, I check out the local Plein Air painting groups online and arrange a meet-up to paint in their favorite locations. I have been doing the Gibsons Paint Out on my own the last few years – with a couple of visiting artists attending the paint outs.
With more promotion for the expanded version of the weekend paint out this year-Town of Gibsons provided the Arts Building and Sechelt Signs donated our fabulous banners. A gift bag was generously donated by Wendy Weir of LibreTea and a draw presented it to visiting Vancouver artist Sonia Mocnik. More Bakery prepared gluten free squares and offered a discount for participating artists on coffee & goodies at their new Landing location in the Trading Post.
Watch for future pop-up plein air gatherings throughout the Sunshine Coast.
The next event is planned for the Sechelt Arts Festival – Oct 26/27 at Snickett Park.
Hosted by Poynter Studio and part of the International Plein Air Painters (I-P-A-P) WORLDWIDE PAINT OUT Enjoy the IPAP Facebook photos of groups with activity concurrently across the the US, in Germany, Greece, Italy & Brazil.
Eight participating artists were painting & sketching on site throughout Gibsons Landing Sept 14/15
There was no registration fee for participants this year, no competition or jurying – beginners to advanced everyone is welcome to join in (please note: there is NO instruction provided – everyone just sketches and paints independantly).
Participating artists were invited to display/sell their original works in an informal setting at the Arts Building. As it grows, this annual event will expand to include demos for beginners, advanced workshops & artist gatherings. The public is always encouraged to watch the artists at work and view the finished paintings on display/sale. The purpose is advance awareness about Plein Air painting, to create an inclusive atmosphere for artists to meet and gather, and provide the public a direct experience with artists and their process.
