well a bit of a challenge this week – a commission for a portrait of a Sechelt First Nations woman for her year memorial service near the end of the month. Always hard to do portraits or subjects with such emotional weight. And not on a canvas, but painted on the last handmade deerskin drum that she created before her death. Twenty inches across and a beautiful thing. It talks to me in the studio. Stretching and creaking with the daily changes in humidity. And a deep, deep resonant thrum with the slightest touch.
Not often my art pieces have a voice of their own.
pressure is on. but happy with the preliminary results so far.
I will post the final portrait later this week.
