Dec 6 – Monte Carlo
interesting to wake up and walk off to yet another language. French today in Monte Carlo. Should be easy for us bi-lingual canucks…but I kept calling the ladies Senora and gratefully saying Gracias.
And what a strange surreal world this place is. With yachts in the harbour, Lamborghini & Bentley dealerships on the main street front, public transit elevators, skating near the pier, and a storybook palace with gaurds and cannonballs overlooking the lot.
After a go-around tour atop the Hop-on bus we stopped at the top of the Palace hill and walked our way down. To the colorful market Condamine market for a cafe where the locals shop for fish, flowers and fruit/veg. The christmas displays and decorations in this decadent place were quite spendid – and we did get to see the evening lights as we departed late in the afternoon.
Most amazing (and welcome) of all was the circuitous system of public elevators through the town. All clean and well maintained. We made our steep way up to the Jarden Exotique – which as you will see certainly lived up to its name. Clinging to the side of a jagged rock face it was quite a spectacular cactus, palms, succulents & echiveria collection with winding steps, caves and balconies. The views over the city and harbour astounding.
