COIN designs for the Royal Canadian Mint

Watch for more coin designs coming in 2017

(I can’t say more as I am sworn to secrecy ;-)

you can still try to order a coin online
or ask at the Canada Post Office

In the spring of 2015 I was invited to be a feature artist in the 2015 Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival event.  As a result of this activity there was lots of online and social media attention. Several months later I received an email from the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa requesting a submission of artwork for a limited edition $15 coin design to celebrate Spring 2016 and feature a cherry blossom.

After many concept sketches, several design submissions and numerous revisions within a very tight deadline, I was notified that my submission was the winning design. Whoo Hoo !!! I was also working on 7 paintings for my artist-in-residence & exhibition in Vernon at the time – with only my small laptop (away from my studio) so it was pretty challenging. There was a few 4:00am starts.

The Royal Canadian Mint has an international reputation for innovation and creativity, and commissions artists throughout Canada to create circulating & limited edition coins. The numismatic (coin collecting) community eagerly awaits the closely guarded launch of new RCM designs, with small editions of original and well recognized designs. The Cherry Blossom Spring 2016 is a limited edition of 6500. I also visited the RCM storefront in Vancouver – at Granville & Georgia. It was great to see the actual coins, the variety of subject images and the range of fabrication and relief engraving.
